A Leading Manufacturer Of Sodium Ion Batteries Will Locate Its First Us Factory In North Carolina

WEB - California battery maker pledges to build $14 billion factory at Eastern NC megasite

A leading manufacturer of sodium-ion batteries will locate its first U.S. factory in North Carolina

California-based Natron Energy plans to invest $1.4 billion in a new battery manufacturing facility in eastern North Carolina.

The company, which makes sodium-ion batteries, said the factory will be its first in the United States and will create 1,500 jobs.

The factory will be located in Chatham County at the Triangle Innovation Point megasite, which is also home to Wolfspeed, Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina, and Boom Supersonic.

Natron Energy said the factory will produce sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, stationary energy storage, and other applications.

Sodium-ion batteries are a less expensive and more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions as the active material. They are less expensive and more sustainable than lithium-ion batteries, which are the most common type of battery used in electric vehicles and other applications.

Natron Energy said its sodium-ion batteries have a longer lifespan and are more resistant to thermal runaway than lithium-ion batteries.

The factory is expected to be operational by 2026

The factory is expected to be operational by 2026 and will produce enough batteries to power 1 million electric vehicles per year.

Natron Energy said it is also planning to build a second factory in the United States, but the location has not yet been announced.
